East Africa Food Crisis Appeal - Posted on: 01/09/11

Famine, drought and conflict have left millions of people needing food, water and healthcare. The UN says that in the last few months, tens of thousands of Somalis have died of causes related to malnutrition. Most of them were children.Very poor rainfall in the region (which includes Somalia, Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Uganda) has led to the driest period in 60 years for some areas, leading to crop failures and deaths of livestock.

Weather and food production forecasts for the coming months are still uncertain and indicate that the worse is yet to come before we see improvement. The Red Cross is one of the few organisations reaching famine-stricken communities in Somalia with food. In Kenya, we are feeding malnourished children and pregnant and lactating women, We’re improving communities’ access to safe drinking water and providing nutritional support and healthcare to malnourished women and children.

Help the Spanish Red Cross provide life-saving food, water and emergency healthcare to families in desperate need.
